TikTok Content Creators Driving Parallel Trade for Unapproved Slimming Medication

An underground market for unlicensed weight-loss medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.

The experimental drug, which is still in clinical trials, is being advertised by social media influencers for its alleged weight-reducing effects. Followers are urged to message these accounts directly for supplier links, while also obtaining promotional offers.

Thriving Commerce on Messaging Platforms

Separately, a robust market exists on messaging services, where groups with numerous of members share comparison photos, injection guides and assertions of rapid British shipping. Sellers promote the drug there before redirecting buyers to other platforms for transactions.

Understanding Retatrutide

This medication is an investigational injection developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug targets three gut hormones – GLP-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Early trials suggest it could assist patients reduce up to a quarter of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed digitally as the next Ozempic.

Healthcare Professionals Voice Concerns

However, physicians and chemists have warned that the distribution of what remains an unapproved drug in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could result in users injecting products of uncertain source.

Several professionals said the demand for retatrutide could be linked to the rising cost of approved weight loss products such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Position and Implementation

Marketing retatrutide on TikTok or messaging apps is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved medication that must not be marketed or distributed for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some content creators try to sidestep the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted substance, but promotion and distribution can still breach pharmaceutical, advertising, and consumer regulations, risking penalties, prosecution or imprisonment.

Platform Reaction and Material Elimination

Based on TikTok, the platform has taken down violative content and prohibited associated keywords and search suggestions. The organization said it was committed to keeping the platform secure and investing in enhancing compliance measures.

Investigations also found communities with up to nine thousand members marketing retatrutide using the platform's integrated discovery tool, which operates like a online catalog. Entering “retatrutide” immediately displays channels with numerous of members, populated with images of weight loss, positive reviews and step-by-step instructions for preparing or injecting at residence.

Within moments of entering one community, a seller posted contact information, where the majority of transactions take place. The vendor provided an guidebook and guaranteed delivery within 48 hours. When questioned whether the product was genuine, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed testing documentation. None asked about weight, medical conditions or past usage.

Inside these groups, posts show black plastic parcels with postal service labels, claiming to contain fresh supplies. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor connected the increase in demand to recent price rises for approved slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, individuals are using social media. But counterfeit injections are highly dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the environment they were produced in was clean,” she explained.

Her team has previously seen individuals harmed by personal administration from unverified suppliers. “We understand the frustration, but buying from messaging apps or communication platforms is taking chances with your well-being,” said Wyllie. “These substances could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said the substance was in phase 3 research studies and had not been evaluated or approved by any government authority globally. “Consequently at this time no one can sell [it] for human use,” they explained, noting that any product “falsely representing itself as a Lilly investigational substance not yet approved … may subject patients to potentially significant medical dangers”.
