An individual profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was publicly declared, raising questions about whether someone profited from confidential information of the US operation.
Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the end of January increased in the period preceding former President Trump announced on Saturday that Maduro had been apprehended.
A single trader, which joined the platform in December and made four bets, all on Venezuela, earned over $nearly half a million from a starting bet of over $32,000.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Platform data shows that traders assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.
Yet the odds had jumped to 11% by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the morning of the next day, pointing to a sudden change in betting activity just before the official statement was made.
"This specific wager has all the hallmarks of a bet based on confidential knowledge," stated a financial reform advocate.
Several of other traders also made significant sums from bets on the same outcome.
Some lawmakers are starting to take note.
A bill put forward on the start of the week seeks to ban government employees from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a wager.
Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in the past few years, with users able to bet on everything from elections to politics.
Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. But it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.
Trading on insider information is a crime in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting space.
A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
